Inclusive, Dynamic Therapy for humans: the Geek, the Creative, and the Seeker.

About Your Therapist

April M. Jacobs, LPC, NCC, KAP
Owner of Asteria Counseling

I believe that the relationship we build together is the most powerful tool for your growth. As a relational therapist, I create an environment that feels less like a clinical office and more like a "comfy" home for your thoughts and feelings. You can say what you need to say, no editing.

Why work with me?

  • I speak your language: I am kink-knowledgeable, poly-allied, and geek-friendly. You won't have to spend your session time educating me on your community or identity.

  • I specialize in "The Detangle": If you are struggling with religious trauma, oppressive power dynamics, or generational cycles, I provide the space needed (including trauma-informed care and psychedelic-informed support) to help you find clarity.

  • I focus on results: Progress in our room looks like setting boundaries with confidence, shifting the way you speak to yourself, and reclaiming your power.

I’m here to listen with curiosity and walk with you as you reach your goals. If you're ready for a therapist who is caring, creative, and kooky, I’d love to connect.

About

About Our Space

If you grew up in a high-control religious environment, you were likely taught to trust an external authority over your own gut instinct. Deconstruction isn't about changing your beliefs; it’s about untangling years of guilt, purity culture, and the fear that you’ll be 'lost' without the structure you once knew. In our sessions, we create a safe container to examine these old narratives without judgment. We work to heal the 'shame-spiral' and rebuild your self-trust, helping you move from a place of fear to a place of personal authority. Whether you are shifting your faith or leaving it behind entirely, I am here to help you navigate the grief and the freedom that comes with reclaiming your own life.

Traditional therapy can sometimes feel a bit... dry. For the gamers, the artists, and the neurodivergent thinkers, I offer a space that speaks your language. We know that sometimes it’s easier to talk about boundaries through a D&D metaphor or to explore social anxiety through the lens of a character’s 'mask.' I specialize in working with 'unmasking'—helping creatives and geeks drop the performance and figure out who they actually are behind the roles they play for others. Whether we’re discussing your latest campaign, your creative burnout, performance anxiety, or how your brain processes the world differently, your interests aren't 'distractions' here—they are the tools we use to build your confidence and help you feel empowered in your real-world 'campaign.

You shouldn't have to spend your first three therapy sessions educating your provider on your pronouns, your polycule, or the basics of kink. I provide a radically inclusive, 'Body +, Kink +, and Poly +' space where your identity is respected from the moment you walk in the door. I work with individuals and couples in the LGBTQIA+ community who are looking for more than just 'tolerance'—they are looking for a therapist who understands the nuances of intersectionality, oppressive power dynamics, and the unique stressors of being queer in the South. My goal is to help you move beyond survival mode and into a life of authentic self-expression, where you feel safe in your body and confident in your relationships.
